Sister Joan Flannigan, (also known as Sister M. Brian), 84, a Dominican Sister of Springfield, died March 3.
She was born to Edward and Harriet Vochrodt Flannigan in Aurora. For 42 years, Sister Joan taught and/or administered in Catholic parish elementary schools: Little Flower, Springfield; Our Saviour, Jacksonville; St. James, Irwin; St. Thomas, Crystal Lake; St. Peter and Holy Angels, Aurora; Our Lady of Grace, St. Christina and St. Edward, Chicago; and Sacred Heart in San Diego. In 1992, Sister Joan was assigned to Marian Catholic High School in Chicago Heights where she ministered for 17 years. After suffering a stroke in 2009, she returned to the motherhouse where she served God's people with her prayers and suffering.
Sister Joan was preceded in death by her parents and her sister Mary Lou Gilbert. She is survived by three nieces and three nephews.
The funeral Mass was held March 5 at Sacred Heart Convent in Springfield, with Father Peter Witchousky, OP, presiding. Final commendation and burial was March 6 at Calvary Cemetery, Springfield.
