Sister Kathryn Edward (Lorene) Knecht, a Springfield Dominican for 66 years, died on July 7. She was born to Edward and Kathryn Schmidt Knecht in Beason and was 91 years old.
Sister Kathryn Edward began a long career in teaching by instructing the primary grades in Springfield, Granite City and Chicago. After returning to school herself, she started teaching high school business classes in Jacksonville, Aurora and Chicago Heights and in Richmond, Mich.
In 1997, Sister Kathryn Edward was assigned as administrative assistant to the prioress general. She continued in that ministry until 2003. She was always one to welcome and assist anyone she encountered.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her brothers, Lawrence and Donald; and her sister, Dorothy. She is survived by four nephews.
A funeral Mass for Sister Kathryn Edward was celebrated at Sacred Heart Convent in Springfield with Father Peter Witchousky, OP, presiding. Burial was in Calvary Cemetery.
