ST. LOUIS — Sister Charlotte Sohovich, OSU, died Aug. 4 at St. Andrew's at Francis Place in Eureka, Mo. She was 102.
Sister Charlotte, the former Leona Dolores Sohovich, was born Sept. 13, 1912 in Livingston to Joseph and Anna Varga Sohovich, both natives of Czechoslovakia. She entered the Ursuline Sisters in Alton in January 1929 and professed her vows in July 1931.
She earned a bachelor's degree in education from DePaul University in Chicago and a master's degree in education from St. Louis University. Her years as a dedicated elementary teacher took her to the Illinois cities of Springfield, Alton, Oak Park, Staunton, Wood River, and Collinsville; to Kirkwood and Bonne Terre in Missouri; Toronto, Ohio; and New Orleans.
In Springfield, Sister Charlotte taught at Blessed Sacrament from 1934-1949, at St. Joseph from 1959-1960, and at St. Aloysius from 1960-1961. She taught at Ss. Peter and Paul in Alton from 1965-1968; at Ss. Peter and Paul in Collinsville from 1968-1974; at consolidated Catholic schools in Alton from 1974-1975; at St. Bernard in Wood River from 1975-1977; and at St. Michael in Staunton from 1977-1981. In 2005 she retired to Queen of Peace in Alton, where she lived until moving to Eureka in 2014.
Sister Charlotte is survived by one of her seven siblings, Udebelle Kacmar of Crown Point, Ind. She was preceded in death by her parents; her sisters Mary Krivi, Anna Dreyovich, Julia Kotulock and Helen Boston; and her brothers Joseph and John.
A funeral Mass for Sister Charlotte was celebrated Aug. 7 at St. Ambrose Church in Godfrey. Burial was in St. Patrick Cemetery in Godfrey.
