Obituary - Sister Eleanora Marie Maurer, OSF

mauer eleanoraSister Eleanora Marie Maurer, OSF, of the Hospital Sisters of St. Francis died on Dec. 31, 2015 at St. Francis Convent, Springfield. She was 93 years old.

Sister Eleanora Marie was born in Red Bud on Sept. 12, 1922, the daughter of Joseph and Annette Parrott Maurer. She entered the congregation on Feb. 2, 1941 and professed her religious vows on Oct. 4, 1943.

She graduated from Fontbonne College in St. Louis with a bachelor's degree in dietetics in 1949. She did an internship in dietetics at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, Minn., from 1949 to 1950. She earned a master's in nutrition from Stout State College in Menomonie, Wis., in 1968.

Sister Eleanora Marie served the community as a dietician at HSHS hospitals in Illinois and Wisconsin during various intervals in her career. She served as an instructor in dietetics at Eau Claire State University in Eau Claire, Wis., from 1956 to 1967. She also served as a clinical dietician at Jewish Hospital in St. Louis from 1970 until 1972 and as a consultant dietician for Brother James Court in Springfield from 1984 to 1997. She served at St. Mary's Hospital in Streator as a dietician, the director of volunteers, and then as a Sister advocate for a total of 19 years until she retired from active duty in 2005.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by four brothers: Joseph G., Arthur, Norbert and Paul Maurer and two sisters: Lucille Maurer and Bernice Otten.

She is survived by a niece, Mary Jane Becker, of Belleville, several nephews, and her Franciscan Sisters with whom she shared her life for over 74 years.

The Eucharistic Celebration and Rite of Christian Burial was celebrated by Father John Sullivan, OFM, on Jan. 5 in St. Clare of Assisi Adoration Chapel at the St. Francis Convent. Burial was in Crucifixion Hill Cemetery.

Staab Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
