ST. LOUIS — Sister Nancy (Mary Pacelli) Fearon, OSU, died peacefully on Oct. 10 at St. Louis University Hospital. She served in the Diocese of Springfield in Illinois for many years. She was 85 years old.
The daughter of Charles W. and Rose McKay Fearon, she was born on July 25, 1931, in Oak Park. She attended Ascension Catholic School in Oak Park and St. Mary’s High School in Chicago. She entered the Ursuline Sisters in July 1959 and professed her first vows in January 1962. After studying at Northwestern and DePaul universities in Chicago, she earned her bachelor’s degree in economics from The College of New Rochelle in New Rochelle, N.Y.
She used her bookkeeping talents at the National Biscuit Co. and United States Blue Print Paper Co., both in Chicago, before joining the Ursuline Sisters. She taught at St. Bernard School in Wood River from 1965 to 1971. She also taught elementary school in Oak Park and Laredo, Texas.
Sister Nancy was treasurer of the Ursuline community in Alton from 1988-1993. She also was treasurer in Ursuline communities in Oak Park; Laredo and Dallas, Texas; and New Orleans. Her versatility and generosity led her to provide community service at Villa Maria Retreat and Conference Center in Frontenac, Minn., and assist the Ursuline Sisters at Christus St. Joseph Village in Coppell, Texas. She returned to Alton in 2013, where she served in local Ursuline leadership and as community treasurer until her death.
Sister Nancy was preceded in death by three brothers: Walter, Charles and Howard Fearon, and five sisters: Catherine McGrath, Jane Flynn, Helen Simonis, Mildred Rann and Sister Mary Magdalen (Anamae) Fearon, OSU. She is survived by two sisters, Jeannette Forbes and Rosemary (John) Ryan, and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral Mass was celebrated Oct. 19 at St. Ambrose Church in Godfrey.
