MANITOWOC, Wis. — Father Richard Jeske, OFM, died on Feb. 13, at St. Mary’s Home at Felician Village in Manitowoc, Wis. He was 85 years old.

Father Richard was born on July 20, 1932, in Cleveland, to Gustav and Paula (Friedl) Jeske. He belonged to Our Lady of the Angels Parish and attended grade school there. After six years of seminary training in Westmont, he was received into the Franciscans of the Sacred Heart Province (headquarters in St. Louis) in 1952 and made his solemn profession in 1956. He was ordained a priest on June 24, 1959 in Teutopolis.

Father Richard’s ministry included parish work in Lincoln, Neb.; Dubuque, Iowa; Cleveland; and St. Louis. He was a missionary in Brazil for 10 years and briefly in Zaire, Africa. He spent a short time as a chaplain in Cleveland, and for 20 years was chaplain at the Illinois Veterans Home in Quincy. Since 2014, he has lived in retirement at Blessed Giles Friary in Manitowoc, with his last year at St. Mary’s Home.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his three sisters: Paula (Joseph) Sabo, Monica (Raymond) Meyers, and Gertrude (George) Pavicic, and three brothers: Gustav Jr. (at birth), Thomas (Peggy), and Ralph (Sally). He is survived by his 34 nieces and nephews and his Franciscan brothers of the Sacred Heart Province.

A funeral liturgy was held at the Blessed Angela Chapel at Felician Village on Feb. 17, with burial at Calvary Cemetery in Manitowoc.
