The summit was called to address poverty issues in the Decatur area and organized by an interdenominational Social Justice Committee established by area Catholic parishes.
Over 100 Nativity sets from around the world will be on display at the Franciscan Nativity Festival, Dec. 5 to 7, at the Chiara Center at the Franciscan Sisters motherhouse on Springfield's far northeast side. The three-day festival is free and open to the public from 2 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 5, and from noon to 4 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 6 and 7.

Diocese transfers property ownership to QND

The Dominican Sisters of Springfield are holding a Taizé Advent prayer service on Sunday, Dec. 14 from 7-8 p.m. at Sacred Heart Convent Chapel at 1237 W. Monroe St. in Springfield. Individuals and families are invited to the prayer service, which will be followed by snacks and refreshments hosted by the Dominicans.

Family from Little Flower thankful for new home

Patty Redpath and her children, who range in age from 17 to 2, are preparing to move from their double-wide mobile home into their new Habitat for Humanity house. The house, at 1000 Knoll Point in Springfield, is the largest ever built by Habitat for Humanity in Sangamon County.
Next month St. Patrick Academy, a middle-school level academy embedded in St. Patrick Catholic School in Springfield, will kick off the public phase of a fund-raiser called The St. Patrick Academy Century Campaign.
Nine men were recently inducted into the Springfield Diocese Knights of Columbus Hall of Fame and will be special guests at an upcoming quarterly meeting of all council officers and other interested members, said Jack Ray, president of the Springfield Chapter Knights of Columbus.
Catholic parishes from Decatur and Mt. Zion who participated in the JustFaith program have established an interdenominational Social Justice Committee to address the poverty issues in the Decatur area.

Community Thanksgiving celebration planned

The Ministerial Alliance of Springfield and Vicinity and Praying for Revival All Year (PRAY) will sponsor a community Thanksgiving celebration at 7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 24, at Southeast High School, Ash and Taylor streets in Springfield. A musical program will begin at 6:30 p.m.

Organizations within the Catholic Diocese of Springfield in Illinois that work with poor and low-income people to help eliminate the root causes of poverty are eligible to apply for financial support through the Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD).

Life is precious, say parade marchers

Mary and Joseph Parish in Carlinville donned "Celebrate Life" T-shirts and made posters to carry in the Rotary Club Halloween Parade, Oct. 25. Respect Life supporters from other communities joined the SSMJ group to walk or ride on its "Celebrate Life" float in the night-time parade.

Breadline Sunday observed

The 23rd annual Breadline Sunday, a bread sale to support St. John's Breadline in Springfield, will be observed in area churches and synagogues after services on Nov. 22 and Nov. 23. The event takes place every year the weekend before Thanksgiving.

At the conference opening Mass on Sunday, All Souls Day, Bishop George J. Lucas in his homily asked, "What will I have to give on the day that it is demanded? Today and tomorrow, we are going to address the question of what it means to live fully in Jesus Christ as stewards."
After an audit conducted Sept. 29-Oct. 2, the Diocese of Springfield in Illinois has been found in full compliance with the church's national standards for child protection programs and the prevention of and response to sexual abuse.

As the Nov. 4 election approaches, Bishop George J. Lucas has issued a two-part invitation to Catholics in the Diocese of Springfield in Illinois.

In his weekly column in this issue of Catholic Times and in a letter to parish leaders, Bishop Lucas first asks that all parishioners in the diocese be invited to a time of eucharistic exposition and adoration in the days preceding the election.

That's because the last Sunday of October is designated as Priesthood Sunday, a one-day celebration of the priesthood originated by parish lay leaders and coordinated by the USA Council of Serra International and the Serra International Foundation.

Bishop George J. Lucas has received a letter from Archbishop Pietro Sambi, apostolic nuncio to the United States, expressing his appreciation for the diocesan contribution of $98,900 to the Peter's Pence collection.
With Thanksgiving just four weeks away, it's time to start thinking about helping those who will be struggling financially this holiday season. As in past years, Catholic Charities' Holy Family Food Pantry, the Crisis and Advocacy Office, and St. John's Breadline - all in Springfield - are requesting donations to meet the needs of those seeking assistance for both Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Group opens Father McGivney HS campaign office

Mass observes peace pastoral anniversary

Bishop George J. Lucas will celebrate a Mass for Peace at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 25, at the Church of the Little Flower in Springfield. The Mass is in observance of the 25th anniversary of the publication of the U.S. bishops pastoral letter The Challenge of Peace: God's Promise and Our Response.
