This year the Hospital Sisters of St. Francis, based in Springfield, are commemorating the 30th anniversary of the formation of the Hospital Sisters Health System (HSHS), while the Hospital Sisters' ministry in this country dates back more than 130 years.

A Letter of Intent has been signed by the Hospital Sisters Health System, acting on behalf of its sponsor, the Hospital Sisters of St. Francis, to assume sole sponsorship of Saint Anthony's Health System, which operates two campuses in Alton, Saint Anthony's Hospital and Saint Clare's Hospital.

Bring dads to YAM Mass, say organizers

Bishop George J. Lucas will celebrate the Young Adult Mass at 8 p.m. Sunday, June 15, in St. Ursula Chapel, on the south side of the SCI/Benedictine campus. Those attending are being encouraged to bring their dads to the Mass on Father's Day.

muniz-ordination-3.jpgmuniz-ordination-3.jpgOn Saturday, May 24, Bishop George J. Lucas ordained Collinsville native Father Kevin A. Muniz to the diocesan priesthood during 11 a.m. Mass at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Springfield.

Beginning July 1, St. Mary Parish in Farmersville, St. Maurice Parish in Morrisonville, and St. Raymond Parish in Raymond will make up the new pastoral unit with Father Gerald Bunse serving as pastoral administrator of all three parishes.

Every school morning and afternoon he is there, helping the students and smiling and waving to car drivers passing by. "His children went to Catholic schools when they were young and he's a big believer in Catholic education," said Vicky Mitchell, fifth-grade teacher at St. Francis.

Knights of Columbus Council #364, Springfield, recently hosted its first banquet for extraordinary ministers of holy Communion from the four parishes served by the council. The purpose of the banquet was to honor those individuals for their service to their respective parishes.

While laughter can very often be heard emanating from the group of women who gather in the church annex each Tuesday morning, the stitches here are quilting stitches - hundreds and hundreds of stitches.

Summer Mass Schedule and Parish Events

Healing Service, Mass set for June 6

MERCY Communities of Springfield has expressed gratitude for a $1,000 grant from the Diocese of Springfield in Illinois through the Operation Rice Bowl program.
Registration begins May 20 and continues through July 9 for on-line courses through the Virtual Learning Community for Faith Formation (VLCFF) initiative of the University of Dayton, Courses run July 13 through Aug. 16 at a cost of $40 each.

The Staunton Food Pantry coordinator expressed gratitude for a $2,000 grant the agency received from money collected in Operation Rice Bowl. One-fourth of the monies collected from Rice Bowl boxes during the Lenten season go to support local hunger-relief programs.

2008 Religious Jubilarians

On the diocesan level this year, several people were recognized for their efforts in Catholic schools by Jean Johnson, superintendent of Catholic schools in the Springfield diocese. She nominated two principals and a parish priest for National Catholic Educational Association (NCEA) awards for their accomplishments in education.
Tuition assistance funds from the Harvest of Thanks, Springtime of Hope campaign for the 2008-2009 academic year will total $147,955. This is up from the $120,085 available for the current school year, according to Barb Burris, associate director for school planning in the diocesan Office for Catechesis.

The ordination that almost wasn’t

Ordination day for Springfield diocesan priests in 1983 was on the diocesan calendar for months. Then the unimaginable happened. Just five weeks before Bishop Joseph A. McNicholas was to ordain the men priests at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Springfield, he died suddenly of a massive coronary thrombosis.
Priests in the Springfield diocese will gather with Bishop George J. Lucas for their annual Priests Jubilee Celebration on Tuesday, May 6, at St. Joseph Parish, Chatham. Seven priests, including one who is a bishop, are celebrating their golden jubilees; four priests are celebrating their silver jubilees, and another priest, who is retired and living in Vermont, is celebrating his 60th jubilee.
The Serra Club of Springfield is hosting Our Lady of Fatima's Pilgrim Virgin Statue at the Catholic Pastoral Center, 1615 W. Washington St. in Springfield, on Thursday, May 8 at 6 p.m.

There to help with the cooking, cleaning and other general duties of keeping the nunciature in order were Mother M. Regina Pacis Coury, provincial superior of the American Province of the Sisters of St. Francis of the Martyr St. George, and Mother M. Ingeborg Rohner, retired superior and second provincial councilor, both of Alton, and Sister Marie Schnabel, who serves on the staff at Archbishop Raymond L. Burke's residence in the Archdiocese of St. Louis.
Pax Christi of Springfield will observe the 25th anniversary of the U.S. Catholic bishops' peace pastoral letter at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, May 8, in the rose garden in Washington Park in Springfield. Pax Christi members will conduct a prayer service and raise the Peace Flag to mark the anniversary.
