Obituary - Sister M. Bernardine Kapusta, OP

Bernardine-KapustaSister M. Bernardine Kapusta, a Dominican Sister of Springfield, died Oct. 5 at age 90. She was born in Benld on Aug. 1, 1924 to Peter and Magdalen Koniak Kapusta. She joined the Springfield Dominicans in 1942.

Sister M. Bernardine was a dedicated educator in many Catholic parish schools. She taught at St. Agnes and Little Flower in Springfield; Holy Angels in Aurora; St. John in Carrollton; St. Joseph and Sacred Heart in Granite City; Ss. Peter and Paul in Cary; St. Francis in Jerseyville; St. Vincent de Paul in Peoria and at St. Michael in Duluth, Minn. From 1986 until 1995 she ministered at Sacred Heart Academy/Sacred Heart-Griffin High School in Springfield. After she "retired" she provided community support services at Sacred Heart Convent in Springfield.

Sister M. Bernardine was preceded in death by her parents and her brother-in-law Joseph Ozanic.

She is survived by her brother Sylvan "Pete" (wife Anne) Kapusta of Springfield; two sisters, Sister M. Stephanie Kapusta, OP, of Springfield and Genevieve Ozanic of Mt. Olive; and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral Mass was celebrated on Oct. 7 at Sacred Heart Convent, with Father Peter Witchousky, OP, presiding. Burial was in Calvary Cemetery. Kirlin-Egan & Butler Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Donations may be made to: Dominican Sisters Retirement Fund, 1237 W. Monroe, Springfield, IL 62704.
