Obituary - Sister Kathryn Hoener, SSND

Kathryn-HoenerST. LOUIS — Sister Kathryn Hoener, SSND, died Sept. 26 at Anna House at The Sarah Community in Bridgeton, Mo. She was 64 and a former teacher, principal and preschool director.

Sister Kathryn was born in Quincy and entered the congregation of the School Sisters of Notre Dame in 1968 from Immaculate Conception (St. Mary) Parish in Quincy. She professed first vows in 1971 and final vows in 1978. She earned a bachelor's degree in mathematics from the former Notre Dame College in St. Louis in 1972 and a master's in elementary education from Clarke College in Iowa in 1984.

During her 43 years as a School Sister of Notre Dame, Sister Kathryn taught math and religion to elementary children in both Missouri and Illinois. She was principal at St. Teresa in Belleville for nine years. In 1996 she was appointed director of the former Notre Dame Preschool on the SSND campus in St. Louis. After 10 years she became the secretary to the provincial leader in Dallas. When the Central Pacific Province was formed in 2011, she became the executive administrative assistant to the provincial council in Dallas.

Sister Kathryn is survived by four sisters: Barbara Strieker and Teresa Weinman, both of Quincy; Martha Hartman of Orlando, Fla.; and Mary Bauer of Arlington Heights.

A funeral Mass was held Oct. 1 in the School Sisters of Notre Dame Theresa Center Chapel in south St. Louis County. Burial was in Sancta Maria in Ripa Cemetery.
