Hoene HenrietteST. LOUIS — Sister Henriette Hoene, SSND, died April 7 at Anna House — the Sarah Community in Bridgeton, Mo. She was 97 years old and a former congregational leader, pastoral associate and teacher. She would have celebrated her 75th jubilee as a School Sister of Notre Dame this May.

Sister Henriette was born in Green Creek. She entered the congregation in 1936 from St. Mary Help of Christians Parish in Green Creek. She professed first vows in 1940 and final vows in 1946. She earned a bachelor's degree in chemistry in 1942, a master's in education in 1951, as well as a master's in theology in 1963.

She ministered in education for 15 years. She taught at Holy Ghost and Rosati-Kain High School in St. Louis and Sacred Heart in Valley Park, Mo. She was principal of Redemptorist High School in New Orleans. She served in ministry to the elderly at St. Francis De Sales Parish in St. Louis for seven years. In the Springfield diocese, she served as a member of a ministry team for nine rural parishes in the Teutopolis area for seven years and as a pastoral associate of St. Francis of Assisi in Teutopolis for three years.

Sister Henriette spent many years in SSND community roles including serving on the SSND general council (leadership) in Rome, as director of initial formation in St. Louis, and in local community leadership and community service at the former St. Louis Province motherhouse.

One of her greatest contributions during her time in Rome related to the letters of Blessed Theresa of Jesus Gerhardinger, foundress of the School Sisters of Notre Dame. She was instrumental in securing copies of the letters that were stored in the Vatican and coordinating the copying and translation of these letters into English. She was one of the sisters who worked extensively on the beatification of Blessed Theresa.

Sister Henriette has no immediate survivors.

A funeral Mass was held April 11 in the School Sisters of Notre Dame Theresa Chapel in south St. Louis County. Burial was in the Sancta Maria in Ripa cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the School Sisters of Notre Dame, Mission Advancement, 320 E. Ripa Ave., St. Louis, MO 63125-2897 or online at www.ssndcentralpacific.org/Partner/Donation.
