Loretto Sister M. Concetta Torrillo, 91, died on Feb. 1, at Loretto Motherhouse Infirmary in Nerinx, Ky. She was born in Granite City, in 1924, and named Maria Magdalena Addolorato, one of four children born to Joseph and Concetta (Gagliardi) Torrillo. She entered the Sisters of Loretto at the Foot of the Cross in 1944 where she made her first vows in 1946 and final vows in 1950.
In Illinois, Sister Concetta taught at schools in Sterling and Highland Park. Elsewhere, she taught for more than two decades in the St. Louis Archdiocese as well as over 20 years in Catholic schools in New Mexico and Texas and as a private tutor at the Loretto Center in Webster Groves, Mo. She received a bachelor's degree in education at Loretto Heights College in Denver.
Sister Concetta was preceded in death by her parents and three brothers, Terenzio, Philip and Terenzio II. She is survived by many cousins including Josephine Gipson of Maryville.
A funeral Mass was held on Feb. 5 at Loretto Motherhouse in Nerinx. Burial was at Loretto Motherhouse Cemetery.
In addition, a memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on March 12 in the chapel of the St. Louis Loretto Center, 590 E. Lockwood Ave., Webster Groves, Mo.
