Sister M. Michaeline Hoffmann, OSF, of the Hospital Sisters of St. Francis died on Feb. 27 at St. Francis Convent in Springfield. She was 94 years old.
Sister M. Michaeline, the former Marcella Hoffmann, was born in Belleville on March 11, 1921, the daughter of Frank and Mary Ripp Hoffmann. She entered the Congregation on Sept. 7, 1940 and professed her religious vows on Oct. 4, 1943.
In 1948, Sister Michaeline graduated as a registered nurse (RN) from St. John’s School of Nursing, Springfield. In 1949, she continued post graduate studies in psychiatric nursing at the Illinois School of Psychiatric Nursing. She served the Community as a nurse at HSHS Hospitals in Illinois and Wisconsin. She was a night supervisor at HSHS St. Mary’s Hospital in Decatur from 1955 until 1963. Sister Michaeline was the nurse supervisor of practical nurses at HSHS St. Anthony’s Memorial Hospital in Effingham from 1964 until 1970. In 1970, she relocated to Chicago and served in home nursing at the Alverna Home Nursing Center until 1972. In 1972, she returned to the Motherhouse in Springfield where she served in the Purchasing/Receiving Department until her retirement from active duty in 2011.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers: Cyril Hoffmann, Frank Hoffmann Jr., and Bernard Hoffmann, and three sisters: Sister M. Francina (Stella) Hoffmann, SSND, Margaret Wissehr, and Sister M. Joella (Anita) Hoffmann, SSND.
She is survived by one sister, Bernice Courtemanche of North Providence, R.I., several nieces and nephews, as well as her Franciscan Sisters with whom she shared her life for over 75 years.
The Eucharistic Celebration and Rite of Christian Burial were celebrated by Father Andre Schludecker, OFM, on March 4, in St. Clare of Assisi Adoration Chapel at the St. Francis Convent. Burial was in Crucifixion Hill Cemetery.
Staab Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
