Obituary - Sister Catherine Duffey, DC

obit-sr-catherine-duffy.jpgobit-sr-catherine-duffy.jpgEVANSVILLE, Ind. - Sister Catherine Duffey, DC, died Oct. 10 at Seton Residence in Evansville, age 89. She was one of five children born to John and Bridget Mahon Duffey in Indianapolis. She entered the Daughters of Charity in St. Louis in April 1940.

After her initial formation training in 1941 at Marillac Provincial House in St. Louis, Sister Catherine was assigned there as a bookkeeper. Later that year, she was sent to St. Mary's Hospital in Milwaukee to become business manager. In 1948, Sister Catherine returned to Marillac Provincial House as an accountant. Beginning in 1952, she filled various positions in business offices of De Paul Hospital, St. Louis; St. Vincent Hospital, Los Angeles; St. Joseph Hospital, Alton; St. Mary's Hospital, Evansville; St. Vincent Infant Hospital, Chicago; and Marillac Provincial House.

In 1973, Sister Catherine was assigned to St. John's Mission in Charleston, Miss. She was at Providence Hospital in Southfield, Mich., as a sister visitor, from 1974-1975, and was missioned to Providence Hospital in Mobile, Ala., to work in the business office for the next four years.

Sister Catherine moved to Evansville and served at Mater Dei Provincialate as an assistant to the provincial treasurer from 1979-1984. She went to Seton Manor in 1984 as the business manager, until she left to be a docent at the Seton Shrine in Emmitsburg, Md., in 1989. Returning to Evansville in 1990, she became an accountant at Mater Dei Provincialate. In 1998, she went to live at St. Vincent Residence and was an outreach worker for the poor at the St. Vincent DePaul Society. Sister Catherine came to live at Seton Residence in 2002, where she was active in the ministry of prayer.

Sister Catherine is survived by her sister, Margaret Eacret of Indianapolis, as well as nieces, nephews, and her sisters in religion.

The Mass of the Resurrection was held Oct. 11 in the Seton chapel. Burial was in St. Joseph Cemetery in Evansville.
