Sister AlbertaST. LOUIS - Sister Alberta Maas, OSU, 89, died April 25 at St. Anthony's Medical Center in St. Louis.
A native of Portage des Sioux, Mo., Sister Alberta was born to Les J. and Frances (Mersman) Maas on May 8, 1919. She entered the Ursuline Sisters of the Roman Union on July 15, 1937, and made her first vows on Jan. 16, 1940.
Sister Alberta served in various places, mostly in Missouri and Illinois, as a teacher, principal and administrator. She taught 15 years at Marquette High School in Alton and served as principal at St. Teresa High School in Decatur for two years.
She was the last survivor of a large family of six boys and three girls. She is survived by many nieces and nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews, great-grandnieces and great-grandnephews, and many friends.
A Mass of Christian burial was held April 29 at Nazareth Living Center in St. Louis, where Sister Alberta had lived since 2004. Burial was at St. Patrick's Cemetery in Godfrey.
