‘Ah Days’ offered at Chiara Center

Chiara Center, a retreat and conference center located on the grounds of the Motherhouse of the Hospital Sisters of St. Francis, will offer the first of four "Ah Days" from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday, Feb. 25. The cost is $15 per person and includes lunch. Pre-registration is required by calling (217) 523-0901.
St. Anthony’s Memorial Hospital held an open house and a heart fair for the community Feb. 14, at its new Southeast Building. Construction began in August 2006 on the 45,000-square-foot, $8.5 million addition, which will house St. Anthony’s Heart Care Services, Pain Management Services, Sleep Studies and additional enhancements and expansion of the Surgery Center for ambulatory patients.

Still doing what she loves

Change is more than a buzzword to Victoria Auda in Gillespie. It is a concept she understands well. The petite, gray-haired Auda will turn 100 on Palm Sunday. Although health problems have slowed her pace a bit in recent years, the mother of Msgr. Lawrence Auda is still doing things she loves.
More than 70 people filled the Dawson Hall chapel on the SCI/Benedictine campus Sunday, Feb. 10, for the first Sunday evening Mass geared for young adults in the Springfield area. Extra chairs were set up to accommodate the crowd.
Frigid weather last weekend did nothing to detain the 354 catechumens and candidates hailing from 63 places in the Springfield diocese (both parishes and universities) from traveling to the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Springfield.
Sister Rosily Menachery, OSF, transferred her membership as a Hospital Sister from the Indian Region into the American Province of the Hospital Sisters of St. Francis on Feb. 2 during vespers and a Ritual of Transfer in St. Francis of Assisi Church, near Springfield. The ceremony was attended by her Franciscan sisters and friends.
Springfield Catholic grade school faculty members kicked off Catholic Schools Week by competing in a volleyball tournament fund-raiser that will benefit another school an ocean and continent away.
The well-worn wooden stage at Blessed Sacrament School in Springfield was filled almost end-to-end with donated items as the faculty, students and parents celebrated "Community Awareness Day" on Jan. 29 in conjunction with Catholic Schools Week.

A new Catholic high school is feasible for the Metro East St. Louis area, according to results of an independent study commissioned by a group of parents in southern Madison County. Catholic Schools For Me (CS4Me) hired the St. Lucie, Fla.-based Partners in Stewardship for Life firm to conduct a study to determine the interest, need and feasibility of building and maintaining a Catholic high school in the southern half of Madison County.
A Mass geared toward young adults in the Springfield area will be held on Sundays, at 8 p.m., starting Feb. 11, in the Dawson Hall Chapel on the SCI/Benedictine campus, 1500 N. Fifth St. Music, preaching and outreach at the Mass will have a target audience of people between the ages of 18 and 35, but anyone is welcome.

Lent begins Feb. 6

Lent begins this year on Ash Wednesday, Feb. 6, and ends just before the Mass of the Lord's Supper on Holy Thursday, March 20 when the Easter Triduum begins.

For over 40 years Blessed Sacrament parishioner Virginia Stannard has watched the Holy Father celebrate midnight Mass on television every Christmas Eve. Although she had been to Rome several times before, Stannard always hoped that one day she would attend that Mass herself. This past Christmas the 81-year-old mother and grandmother decided to invest in a trip of a lifetime. Moreover, she treated 15 of her relatives to the same holiday.
The Diocesan Council of Catholic Women (DCCW) will hold its annual Lenten retreat on Wednesday, March 5 and Thursday, March 6 at Villa Maria-Catholic Life Center in Springfield. All women of the diocese are invited.
Madison County Catholic Charities (MCCC), has opened a new facility in downtown Edwardsville. Thrifty Threads, Etc. is the name of the new resale shop located at 500 N. Main St.
On Jan. 15, Father Richard Chiola, parishioners and friends at St. Frances Cabrini Parish in Springfield experienced the completion of a pro-life fund-raising challenge that will benefit poor citizens in Kenya. They raised $25,000 through the gifts of more than 375 people to ship donated medical equipment and supplies to a medical center that Archbishop Zaccheus Okoth of Kisumu, Kenya recently rebuilt, as well as to medical training facilities in that area.
Nine students at St. Anthony High School have been named 2008 State Scholars by the Illinois Student Assistance Commission (ISAC). The State Scholar program recognizes Illinois high school students for outstanding academic achievement.
Our Lady of Lourdes Parish will begin its 50th anniversary celebration with an opening Mass on the feast of Our Lady of Lourdes, Feb. 11, at 6 p.m. On the same day, Lourdes, France is commemorating the 150th anniversary of Our Lady's first appearance there to Bernadette Soubirous in 1858.

NFP classes offered for Alton area

Natural Family Planning classes will begin Feb. 18 at 7 p.m. in the Saint Clare's Professional Building at 519 E. Fifth St.
This year marks 35 years since Roe v. Wade legalized abortion in the United States. Since that time it is estimated that 47 to 48 million babies have been aborted in the U.S. alone. With those statistics in mind, Quincy organizations committed to promoting the value of all human life - including the lives of the unborn - will sponsor a variety of prayer events Jan. 19-26, in honor of Sanctity of Human Life Week.
"Called to Be Disciples," remembering women's discipleship in the ministry of Jesus, will be the subject of a spiritual day for women and men, set Feb. 23 in Springfield. The day will include prayer, Scripture, music, dance and presentations.
Over 300 young people, youth ministers and adult chaperones from the Springfield diocese are traveling to Washington, D.C., to participate in the annual March for Life on Jan. 22, the 35th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, the U.S. Supreme Court decision that legalized abortion in this country.
Knights of Columbus Council 665 participated in the recent "Keep Christ in Christmas" poster contest sponsored by the Illinois State Council Knights of Columbus.

DCCW accepting scholarship applications

The Springfield Diocesan Council of Catholic Women (DCCW) is again offering three $1,000 scholarships to young Catholic women in their senior year of high school to pursue higher education. The criteria for the scholarships are that the young women exemplify the DCCW mission values of leadership, faith and service. Scholarship applications are encouraged from those in Catholic and public high schools, and home schools.
With the new year under way, now is a good time for teachers, catechists and people who are interested in learning more about their Catholic faith to consider signing up for online courses through the University of Dayton, says Chris Malmevik, associate director for catechesis in the diocesan Office for Catechesis.
Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Parish will host a parish mission on stewardship Jan. 26-29 at the church, 207 Vandalia St. in Collinsville. The theme of the mission will be "More than Silver or Gold."
Several churches in Auburn will observe the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity that is observed worldwide every year Jan. 18-25. This year, 2008, is the centennial observance.
The Young Catholic Musicians, a group of singers and musicians from the St. Louis metropolitan area, will perform a concert and lead the music at Masses Jan. 5 and 6 at St. Joseph Church, 1345 N. Sixth Street, Springfield.
