Obituary - Sister M. Rosaire Barton, OP

obit-Sr-M-Rosaire-BartonSister M. Rosaire Barton, OP, 94, died June 30 at the Dominican Motherhouse in Springfield. Having graduated from Cathedral Grade School and Sacred Heart Academy in Springfield, she joined the Dominican Sisters of Springfield in 1936.

From 1938-1988, Sister M. Rosaire taught in parish elementary schools: Our Lady of Grace, St. Edward and St. Christina in Chicago; St. Thomas, Newton and Crystal Lake; St. Anne, St. Anne; St. Joseph, Granite City; St. Michael, Michael; St. Malachy, Rantoul; St. Vincent DePaul, Peoria; St. Augustine, Richmond, Mich.; Holy Rosary, Duluth, Minn.; and Sacred Heart, Brawley and San Diego, Calif. After Sister M. Rosaire retired from teaching, she assisted the sisters in the convent by sewing, cooking and baking at Holy Rosary, Duluth, Minn.; Holy Ghost, Hammond, La.; St. Dominic, Jackson, Miss; and at the motherhouse in Springfield.

Sister M. Rosaire was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers (both named Joseph) and a sister, Patricia Schutt. She is survived by four nieces and two nephews.

The Funeral Mass was held July 2 at Sacred Heart Convent, with Father Peter Witchousky, OP, presiding. Burial was in Calvary Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Dominican Sisters Retirement Fund, 1237 W. Monroe, Springfield, IL 62704.

Kirlin-Egan and Butler Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
