Obituary - Sister Wilma Marie Broemmel, OP

brommel-wilma-sr-bwtSister Wilma Marie (M. Pius) Broemmel, OP, a Dominican Sister of Springfield, died Nov. 30. She was 98 years old and was born in Quincy to Bernard and Antoinette Holtkamp Broemmel.

After joining the Springfield Dominicans in 1954 Sister Wilma Marie taught in the Diocese of Springfield in Illinois at Little Flower School and at St. Agnes School, both in Springfield; St. Mary School in Mt. Sterling; Routt Catholic High School in Jacksonville; and Holy Ghost School in Jerseyville. She also taught at St. Bernadette School in Evergreen Park; St. Joseph School in Bradley and St. Charles Borromeo School in Hampshire. From 1991-2001, she ministered in pastoral care at St. Dominic's Hospital in Jackson, Miss. After she "retired" she provided community support services at Sacred Heart Convent.

Sister Wilma Marie was preceded in death by her parents and her brothers, Lawrence and Richard. She is survived by five nephews.

A funeral Mass for Sister Wilma Marie was held on Dec. 3 at Sacred Heart Convent, followed by commendation and burial at Calvary Cemetery with Father Steven Janoski presiding. Memorial donations may be made to: Dominican Sisters Retirement Fund, 1237 W. Monroe, Springfield, IL 62704.
