Forty SHG students named Illinois State Scholars
Forty students from Sacred Heart-Griffin High School have been recognized as 2008 Illinois State Scholars, according to SHG principal Sister Margaret Joanne Grueter, OP. The prestigious award is given annually by the Illinois Student Assistance Commission (ISAC), which is recognizing 18,178 high school students from across the state as this year's state scholars.

Year of Reconciliation aims to heal divisions
It has been almost 100 years since the Springfield Race Riot of 1908 brought hatred, murder and destruction to the streets of the capital city. During those few days, seven people died (including two black men who were lynched), many more were injured and dozens of homes and businesses owned by black individuals were destroyed.

Choir carols to homebound, rides on Springfield trolley

Quincy University introduces new president; first lay person to head university
Quincy University ends the fall semester just as Robert Gervasi is introduced as its next president. Gervasi, 57, will officially assume office in June 2008 as the 22nd president of the liberal arts college. Married and the father of three, Gervasi is the first lay person to head the university, which was founded in 1860 by Franciscan friars from Germany.

Decatur’s St. Teresa High School featured in magazine
St. Teresa High School in Decatur is featured as School of the Month in the November/December 2007 issue of Today's Catholic Teacher magazine. The school was honored for its K-9 Kafé project. A similar feature article on the project, written by reporter Cathy Locher, ran in Catholic Times last spring.

After 20 years, Marian Center keeps growing
In Springfield, one man's devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary has made a world of difference in thousands of lives. It was just over 20 years ago when Dr. David Mack returned from a visit to Medjugorje, where he had purchased a number of traditional Catholic books. Although he had hoped to donate the books to a store in Springfield, that place wasn't interested in receiving them. That's when the orthopedic surgeon made the decision to open his own store.

Musical, project for homeless help Holy Family students prepare for celebration of Christmas
After rehearsing for weeks, the youngest students at Holy Family School are almost ready to present the Christmas musical Beneath a Shining Star. The musical will be performed for parishioners at Holy Family Church after the last Mass on Sunday, Dec. 16, beginning at 12:15 p.m. After the performance, a potluck birthday party for Jesus will be held in the Holy Family School gym. Everyone is encouraged to bring an item to donate to homeless children in Decatur, through Project Success.

St. Michael hosts four-parish mission
The public is invited to a four-parish mission Dec. 10-12 hosted by St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church, Sigel, in conjunction with St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church, Neoga; Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Lillyville; and St. Mary Help of Christians Catholic Church, Green Creek. Chiara Center offers first Franciscan Nativity Festival
In anticipation of the season of Advent, Chiara Center in Springfield, a ministry of the Hospital Sisters of St. Francis, will present a Franciscan Nativity Festival Nov. 30-Dec. 2. The festival, which runs from 1-4 p.m. each day, is free and open to the public and groups are welcome.

St. Joseph’s Home unveils 2007 Official City of Springfield ornament
St. Joseph's Home of Springfield unveiled the Official City of Springfield Ornament for 2007 during a special ceremony held at the Tinsley Building in downtown Springfield on Nov. 6. The newest ornament, entitled The Lincoln Family in Springfield, is the 15th in a series of ornaments that honor Springfield's landmarks. The ornaments are issued annually by St. Joseph's Home.

St. Jerome youth’s cardboard city raises funds, awareness for homeless
Who are the homeless? Are they just like the rest of us? Are we all just a few steps away from losing our homes and way of life? Teens at St. Jerome Parish in Troy have been learning answers to those questions over the past year, and on a recent Saturday they were able to get a taste of what it's like to be homeless.
