Sister M. Henrietta Eixler, of the Sisters of St. Francis of the Martyr St. George, died on June 17, at St. Francis Convent. She was 86.

She was born Jan. 27, 1930 in Meppen, Germany to Heinrich and Anna (Huer) Eixler and baptized Agnes.

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS — Brother Leo V. Ryan of the Clerics of St. Viator died on June 22 at the Moorings of Arlington Heights Rehabilitation Center. He was 89 years old.

Brother Ryan was born on April 6, 1927 in Waukon, Iowa, the son of John and Mary (O’Brien) Ryan. He was an Army veteran and held a bachelor’s in business administration from Marquette University, an MBA from DePaul University in Chicago and a Ph.D. from Saint Louis University School of Commerce and Finance.

Sister Marie Clare Scheible, OSF, of the Hospital Sisters of St. Francis died on June 12 at St. Francis Convent in Springfield. She was 91.

Sister Marie Clare was born in Rochester, N.Y., on June 27, 1924, the daughter of Anthony and Florence Servatius Scheible. She entered the congregation on Sept. 8, 1947 and professed her religious vows on June 13, 1950.

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS — Father Kenneth E. Yarno, CSV, died June 8 in Arlington Heights. He was 84.

He was born on March 4, 1932 in Watseka, the son of Edward and Dorothy (Garing) Yarno. He is preceded in death by his parents and his brothers, Melvin of Kankakee and Russell of Fort Walton Beach, Fla. He is survived by his sister, Pauline Newquist of Colliersville, Tenn., and nephews Michael Newquist and Bruce Yarno.

Springfield Dominican Sister Mary Ventura, OP, died on April 26 at Sacred Heart Convent. She was born in Bradley, in 1928, one of four children born to Philip and Josephine Ciaccio Ventura. She made her profession of vows in 1947 at Sacred Heart Convent, Springfield. Sister Mary gave her life educating children and adults. As a primary school teacher, she served in Chicago, Mt. Sterling, Odell, and Springfield.

Springfield Dominican Sister Josephine Therese Uhll, OP, died on April 9.

She was born in Morrisonville in 1918. Named Mildred Marie, she was one of four children born to James B. and L. Josephine Young Uhll. She took the religious name Josephine Therese and made her profession of vows in 1937 at Sacred Heart Convent, Springfield.

Springfield Dominican Sister Mary Bede DuChene died on April 19 at Sacred Heart Convent. She was born in Trenton, Mich., in 1923 and named Veronica Agnes. She was one of 12 children born to William and Agnes Dubry DuChene. She made her profession of vows in 1944 at Sacred Heart Convent, Springfield.

Sister M. Bede spent her life as an educator, principal and librarian, sharing her love of learning with children of all ages in central Illinois and Chicago.

Springfield Dominican Sister M. Regina Graham, OP, died on March 16. She was born in Martinsville, in 1926 and named Helen Joan, one of eight children born to William and Lena (Callahan) Graham. She took the name M. Regina when she made her profession of vows in 1943 at Sacred Heart Convent, Springfield.

Sister M. Regina served the people of God for 73 years. Her early years of ministry were given to kindergarten teaching at Little Flower (1948-1952) and Christ the King (1958-1966). She was a founding teacher in both schools. She also served at Holy Rosary Duluth, Minn.; St. John Bosco, Chicago; Holy Family, Decatur; and St. Bernadette, Evergreen Park, before becoming principal of Rosary High School, Aurora, where she served from 1979-1989.

Sister M. Michaeline Hoffmann, OSF, of the Hospital Sisters of St. Francis died on Feb. 27 at St. Francis Convent in Springfield. She was 94 years old.

Sister M. Michaeline, the former Marcella Hoffmann, was born in Belleville on March 11, 1921, the daughter of Frank and Mary Ripp Hoffmann. She entered the Congregation on Sept. 7, 1940 and professed her religious vows on Oct. 4, 1943.

Loretto Sister M. Concetta Torrillo, 91, died on Feb. 1, at Loretto Motherhouse Infirmary in Nerinx, Ky.  She was born in Granite City, in 1924, and named Maria Magdalena Addolorato, one of four children born to Joseph and Concetta (Gagliardi) Torrillo. She entered the Sisters of Loretto at the Foot of the Cross in 1944 where she made her first vows in 1946 and final vows in 1950.

Springfield Dominican Sister M. Cecilianne Duello died on Feb. 2, at Sacred Heart Convent in Springfield. She was born in Alton in 1940, and named Mary Ann, the eldest of four children born to Clement and Helen (Mass) Duello. She took the name M. Cecilianne when she made her profession of vows in 1960.

Sister M. Paulette Collings, OSF, of the Hospital Sisters of St. Francis died on Jan. 22 at St. John's Hospital in Springfield. She was 91 years old.

Sister M. Paulette, the former Martha Rita Collings, was born in Newton on Oct. 1, 1924, the daughter of Clarence and Jennie Marie Ochs Collings. She entered the congregation on Feb. 2, 1946 and professed her religious vows on Oct. 4, 1948.

Sister Dolorine Czok, OSF, of the Hospital Sisters of St. Francis, died on Jan. 8 at St. Francis Convent, Springfield. She was 101 years old.

Sister Dolorine was born in Kempa, Silesia, Germany on April 17, 1914, the daughter of Franz and Maria Schymassek Czok. She entered the congregation on May 31, 1933 in Germany and professed her religious vows on May 3, 1936 in the American Province.

Sister Janet Ebben, OSF, of the Hospital Sisters of St. Francis, died on Jan. 12 at St. Francis Convent, Springfield. She was 97 years old.

Sister Janet was born in Kaukauna, Wis., on Aug. 20, 1918, the daughter of Henry and Mary Huven Ebben. She entered the congregation on Feb. 2, 1937 and professed her religious vows on Oct. 4, 1939.

Sister Eleanora Marie Maurer, OSF, of the Hospital Sisters of St. Francis died on Dec. 31, 2015 at St. Francis Convent, Springfield. She was 93 years old.

Sister Eleanora Marie was born in Red Bud on Sept. 12, 1922, the daughter of Joseph and Annette Parrott Maurer. She entered the congregation on Feb. 2, 1941 and professed her religious vows on Oct. 4, 1943.

Sister Alverna Hollis, a Springfield Dominican Sister for 57 years, died on Dec. 1. Born in Chicago in 1937, her parents, Aloysius and Isabelle Adrian Hollis, named her Adrienne.

Among her many talents, Sister Alverna was known as a life-long student, teacher, artist, author, editor, speaker, consultant, organizer, interpreter for the deaf, fundraiser, traveler and innovator.

Sister Mary Jerome Goeckner, ASC, died Nov. 17 at the Ruma Center. She was 102 years old and had been a professed member of the Adorers of the Blood of Christ for 85 years.

Sister Rose (Margaret Rose) Schrage, ASC, died Nov. 14 at the Ruma Center. She was 86 years old and had been a professed member of the Adorers of the Blood of Christ for 67 years.

Sister Mary Carolyn Englum, 85, a Springfield Dominican Sister for 65 years, died Oct. 26. An Illinois native, her parents Louis and Agnes Dugan Englum named her Barbara Ann when she was born in Paris, in 1930. She took the name Mary Carolyn at her first profession of vows in 1950.

RUMA — Sister Gemma Hellmann, ASC, died on Sept. 26 at the Ruma Center. She was 78 and had been an Adorer of the Blood of Christ for 59 years.

She entered the Adorers of the Blood of Christ at Ruma on Dec. 30, 1954; professed her first vows as Sister Gemma on July 1, 1956; and made her final profession of vows on July 1, 1961.

Sister Mary Sharon Wiertz, 83, a Springfield Dominican Sister for 63 years, died on Sept. 25. She was born to Charles and Margaret Cosgrove Wiertz in Spring Valley.

In the early days of her religious life, Sister Mary Sharon taught primary grades in Springfield, Hardin, New Berlin, Pana, St. Anne, Mendota, Chicago, Matteson, and Sauk Village. She taught also in Denver and in Richmond, Mich. A person of many talents, she served in pastoral ministry in Chicago and in Jackson, Miss., and then demonstrated her culinary arts as cook and baker for her sisters who taught at Sacred Heart-Griffin High School. When she returned to the motherhouse to retire, she assisted the community in various roles.

Sister Marie Neier, of the Hospital Sisters of St. Francis, died Sept. 14 at St. Francis Convent in Springfield. She was 94.

Sister Marie, the former Marie Magdalene Neier, was born in Washington, Mo., on Nov. 20, 1920, the daughter of August and Rose Zwicke Neier. She entered the congregation on Feb. 2, 1938 and professed her religious vows on Oct. 4, 1940. This year, she celebrated 75 years of religious profession.

RUMA — Sister Virginia Walsh, ASC, died Sept. 24, at the Ruma Center. She was 91 and had been a professed member of the Adorers of the Blood of Christ for 71 years.

She was born to Irish immigrant parents in Syracuse, N.Y., who moved to St. Louis when she was 4 years old. Orphaned by age 11, she was raised by an aunt and uncle.

Sister Mary Bernard Braun, an Adorer of the Blood of Christ for 78 years, died Sept. 10 in Ruma.  She was 97.

Sister Mary Bernard, baptized Georgia, was the eldest of three children born to Aloysius and Mabel (Carron) Braun. She grew up in Dupo and attended St. Teresa Academy in East St. Louis, until she joined the community of Adorers and completed high school in Ruma.

Sister Mary Joseph Weigand, a Dominican Sister of Springfield, died Aug. 15 at age 91. She was given the name Helena Marie by her parents, Arthur and Clara Duncheon Weigand. Born in Beardstown, she joined the Springfield Dominicans in 1949.

Sister Charlotte Sohovich, OSU, died Aug. 4 at St. Andrew's at Francis Place in Eureka, Mo. She was 102. Sister Charlotte, the former Leona Dolores Sohovich, was born Sept. 13, 1912 in Livingston to Joseph and Anna Varga Sohovich, both natives of Czechoslovakia. She entered the Ursuline Sisters in Alton in January 1929 and professed her vows in July 1931.

Sister Antoinette "Toni" Cusimano, an Adorer of the Blood of Christ, died July 21 at the community's center in Ruma. She had been an Adorer for all but 20 of her 79 years. A Chicago native born to immigrants from Sicily, she was a teacher, missionary, pastoral minister and healer. The first of two children born to Vito and Rose (Modica) Cusimano, Sister Antoinette earned a bachelor's degree in elementary education from Saint Louis University in 1968 and a master's degree in education from Southeast Missouri State University. She later was certified as a practitioner of the ancient art of healing touch.

Sister M. Jane (Frances Marie) Ratermann, an Adorer of the Blood of Christ for 60 years, died July 22 at the Ruma Center. She was 80 years old. Sister Jane was born Sept. 5, 1934 in Breese, the ninth of 12 children born to Joseph and Wilma (Woltering) Raterman. She entered the Adorers on Aug. 29, 1953, made her first vows on July 1, 1955 and her final profession on July 1, 1960.

Sister Maxine Riker, a Springfield Dominican for 53 years, died July 19. She was 73 years old. Born in Springfield, Sister Maxine was the daughter of Max Kurt and Frances Clarke Riker. She was inspired by the Dominican Sisters who taught her at St. Agnes School and Sacred Heart Academy to join them.
