Cathedral restoration proceeding on schedule

cathedral-ceiling.jpgcathedral-ceiling.jpgRestoration work at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Springfield is on schedule and going smoothly, said Kevin Handy, project coordinator from Graham & Hyde Architects, Inc.

Parishes from the Springfield diocese and dioceses around the United States have been asked to participate in a massive postcard campaign for life. The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops and the National Committee for a Human Life Amendment are co-sponsoring the "Fight FOCA" campaign.

Lucas for a visit Dec. 29 and 30 at Villa Maria Catholic Life Conference and Retreat Center on Lake Springfield. The annual holiday gathering is an opportunity for the seminarians not only to spend time with the bishop, but also to spend time with each other, as they are studying at different seminaries and colleges, said Father Christopher House, vocation director.

holy-land-bishop.jpgholy-land-bishop.jpgShortly before Christmas, pilgrims associated with Our Sorrowful Mother's Ministry in Vandalia traveled to the Holy Land, where they received a special blessing, said Vanessa Keck, who leads the ministry along with Debbie Pryor. The two women founded OSMM in 1997.

OSMM is a lay community dedicated to being apostles for the Lord and Our Lady. Members carry out a mission to be servants with integrity and faithfulness, Keck said.

Knights of Columbus in the Effingham area have found a way to keep the real meaning of Christmas in the public eye this Christmas season, said Eric Koester, chairman of the Keep Christ in Christmas campaign.

Teens Encounter Christ (TEC) is about to begin its 35th year in Springfield, says Denny Baker, one of the TEC board members. As a kickoff of this celebration, the TEC community will host a Christmas party at Little Flower Parish in Springfield on Saturday, Dec. 20.

Bishop blesses new home for Catholic Charities

Lucas blessed the new administrative offices for Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Springfield in Illinois, which are now located in a facility adjoining the Catholic Pastoral Center at 1625 W. Washington St. The blessing was followed by a reception with refreshments and tours of the facility.
Members of all parishes participating in the Why Catholic? program are invited to attend an enrichment and spiritual formation program on "Christ's Presence in the Eucharist: A Eucharistic Spirituality for Today."

St. Mary’s Hospital announces expansion plans

s.jpgs.jpgDetails of a proposed $3.1 million expansion and renovation plan for St. Mary's Hospital in Decatur were unveiled at a press conference on Nov. 18, the eve of the 130th anniversary of St. Mary's Hospital. The 94,000 square foot expansion project includes a new emergency department, front lobby and registration area and a reconfigured parking area.
