Bridge the Gap to Health expands in 2008

Quincy Catholic Charities, Quincy Medical Group and Blessing Hospital are teaming up for the eighth annual Bridge the Gap to Health Run/Walk on Saturday, April 12, at Clatt Adams Park, starting at 9 a.m. The run/walk starts at the Quincy Riverfront and crosses the Bayview Bridge to Missouri and back.
Three students from Sacred Heart-Griffin High School in Springfield have been named National Merit Scholar finalists, according to Sister Margaret Joanne Grueter, OP, principal. The finalists are: Allison Midden, William Singh  and Matthew Wolfson.
Approximately 500 people came to the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception on Monday of Holy Week to take part in the annual chrism Mass. Bishop George J. Lucas concelebrated the Mass along with about 60 diocesan and religious priests from throughout the diocese. About 20 deacons and several seminarians took part in the Mass as well.
During this, the holiest week of the year, Lent ends and the Easter triduum - a single three-day celebration of the Paschal mystery - begins with the Mass of the Lord's Supper on Holy Thursday evening.

Divine Mercy Novena to be held

The Divine Mercy Novena will be prayed in St. Katharine Drexel Parish, at Sacred Heart Church, 730 S. 12th St., Springfield.
The Pregnancy Care Center of Springfield will celebrate 30 years of service at its annual spring luncheon on Monday, April 7, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Northfield Inn. Tickets are $25, which includes a silent auction and an education program. Doors will open at 11 a.m. for the silent auction.
The Unified Springfield Catholic School Marketing Council has been awarded a $12,000 grant from the Father Michael J. McGivney Memorial Fund for New Initiatives in Catholic Education to promote Catholic education in the see city.

Street retreat to raise homeless awareness

The Quincy area community is invited to take part in the Lent Street Retreat on Saturday, March 15. The event is sponsored by Quincy University Campus Ministry.

Penance focus of parish mission

St. Anthony of Padua Parish will host a parish mission March 8 to 13 given by Father Kristopher McKusky, a priest of the Diocese of Duluth, Minn.
Renovation work in 2006 at the then 55-year-old St. Mary Church in Taylorville revealed a surprise to many people. During a 1972 renovation after Vatican II, a handmade art glass mosaic of St. Joseph on the right side of the sanctuary had been entirely covered up, only to later be partially uncovered to balance a scaled down mosaic of the Blessed Mother on the other side of the sanctuary.

Daughters of Charity win award

The Daughters of Charity who began Catholic Charities in Effingham and served at the agency during the past 26 years were honored with the Catholic Charities' 2008 Vineyard Award during the Catholic Charities annual benefit dinner dance held last month at the Teutopolis Knights of Columbus Hall.
Now in its third year in this diocese, JustFaith, a program offered through the diocesan Office for Social Concerns, is changing lives for the better, says Sister Jane Boos, SSND. This program, used nationally by dozens of dioceses, is sponsored by Catholic Charities USA, the Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD) and Catholic Relief Services (CRS). It is a conversion-based process that helps participants grow in their commitment to care for the vulnerable and become advocates for justice.
The third annual conference of the Our Lady of the Highways Ministry and St. Raymond Parish at the K. of C. Hall in Raymond will be held April 5. "Living the Faith: Today and Tomorrow" is the conference theme.
Four town hall meetings are scheduled throughout southern Madison County to discuss the recent Catholic high school feasibility study commissioned by Catholic School For Me (CS4Me), a group of parents from the area.
The familiar introduction to Saturday Night Live is the loose theme of this year's trivia night to benefit St. Ambrose School in Godfrey. The event, sponsored by the St. Ambrose Parents Association, will be held in the school gym on Saturday, March 15 at 7 p.m.
The Sangamon County Child Advocacy Center will hold the second annual La Nuit de L'Enfant (The Night of the Child) Gala Fund-raiser on Friday, March 28, at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Springfield. The event begins at 6:30 p.m. with cocktails and hors d'oeuvres, followed by a keynote address by author and inspirational speaker Bonnie St. John, named one of the five most inspiring women in America by NBC News. The evening will conclude with a musical tribute to children featuring local children and emceed by Gus Gordon.
Just a block west of the Catholic Pastoral Center in Springfield at Fairhills Mall, the handwork of a Curia staffer was on display during the month of February at the Calico Heart Quilt Shop. The quilts and wall hangings were made by Barb Scoggins, an accountant in the diocesan Office for Finance, who was featured quilter of the month.

Cathedral open house set for March 2

On Sunday, March 2, there will be an open house from noon to 2 p.m. at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Springfield. The open house is being held in conjunction with Bishop George J. Lucas' recently announced plan to begin the restoration of the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception this autumn.

Diocese thanked for contribution

Bishop George J. Lucas has received a letter thanking the people of the Diocese of Springfield in Illinois for a contribution of $115,906 to the 20th annual Retirement Fund for Religious collection.
The Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Springfield will undergo an $1l million restoration which is anticipated to take over a year to complete, once it begins in the fall. Bishop George J. Lucas announced details of the plan at a Feb. 25 news conference held in the nearly 80-year-old cathedral.
On Feb. 5, students in grades five through eight from St. Louis School in Nokomis took part in a speech contest sponsored by Modern Woodmen of America, a national provider of fraternal financial services and programs.

Diocesan choir offers Way of the Cross concert

The diocesan choir will present a free concert of music featuring choral settings of the Stations of the Cross on Friday, Feb. 29 at 7:30 p.m. at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, 800 S. Sixth St. at Lawrence Avenue in Springfield.
With Lent already under way, the staff and volunteers at Holy Family Food Pantry in Springfield are gearing up for the distribution of Easter food baskets. The baskets will include the makings for a traditional Easter dinner, plus a week's worth of groceries. Easter baskets and candy for children will also be included, as will eggs and Easter egg coloring dye kits.
Students at Little Flower School in Springfield have been spending the months of January and February broadening their cultural horizons and learning how to accept and understand people all across the world.
Students at St. Louis School celebrated Catholic Schools Week, Jan. 27-Feb. 2, by reaching out to help others in the community.
Nineteen students from Holy Family School recently were recognized in the International Leadership Network's new Illinois program. This is the first time outstanding students in grades 5-10 have been recognized as Gateway East Young Achievers.
